$5-Million Carlsbad Taxes to bury Trains, not Powerlines; Free “Burials” in San Clemente
Terrific U-Trib article June 27 includes overhead photo of railroad tracks buried by another landslide courtesy of Mother Nature in San Clemente, “for free.”
Meanwhile, SANDAG, for years, has been addressing the outrageously expensive need to divert the tracks, and houses, eastward from Del Mar; also because of Nature. They call the house re-location a "retreat."
Ultimately, there will be coastal rail service between Oceanside and Solana Beach ONLY; how much should be spent on that?
Freight trains will not be needed because driverless big rigs will safely fill the freeways between 7 PM and 7 AM.
Trains are entertaining, not ugly. The antiquated overhead power lines ARE ugly. Years ago, Carlsbad accepted a secret check from SDGE in order to crazily acquire the burden to take down the poles and bury the lines; acknowledged by Mayor Hall at a public meeting. When SDGE did the undergrounding in Julian, the shocking cost was $3,000,000 per mile.
Other than Carlsbad’s $100,000,000 golf course, the Carlsbad power line situation is the worst thing any city government has ever done.
Passenger Train "Service" between only Oceanside and Solana Beach has minimal value; similar to the expensive "Bridge to Nowhere" in Alaska. This $5,000,000 Crazy Carlsbad Commitment should be cancelled.
